Lion is renowned for its majesty and strength and it is the second-largest living cat after the tiger. Lion is the only social member of the Cat family which lives in large groups called 'prides'.


First time Patna Zoo received two male and two female lions from wild origin in the year 1978. These four lions started breeding in the year 1982 and this lead to start of conservation breeding of lion at Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park.

Patna Zoo transferred lion to Ranchi and Jaipur Zoos under animal exchange programme. Patna Zoo received two hybrid lion from Bokaro Zoo in the year 2003 named Rambha and Urvashi.


Hyderabad Zoo provided two lion in the year 2007 named Vishal and Saraswati. These two lion breed successfully in the year 2012 and two cub 'Samrat' and Sheru survived.


At present Patna Zoo has three male (Vishal, Sheru and Samrat) and one female (Urvashi) lion.


FOOD HABITAT AT PATNA ZOO

Per animal per day

  • Beef- 6-7 Kgs.
  • Chicken- 2-2.50 Kgs.
  • It is standard diet and it varies with season to season.

  • Conservation Status: Endangered
  • Only 500 Asiatic Lions left in the wild.
  • The prides can contain only 2-4 adult females whereas those of African lions may have 6-8 adult females.
  • Male lions join the pride lionesses to mate and on a large kill.
  • In areas with little vegetation lions go hunting at night while in areas with thick vegetation they can hunt during the daytime.
  • Mane of a lion is a mark of its age: old lions have a darker mane.
  • The closest relatives of lions are tigers: without fur, these two look almost the same, and only an expert can distinguish them from one another.
  • Average life-span in 10-13 years.

  • कम वनस्पति वाले क्षेत्रों में शेर रात में शिकार करने जाते हैं जबकि घनी वनस्पति वाले क्षेत्रों में वे दिन के समय शिकार कर सकते हैं।
  • शेर की अयाल उसकी उम्र का एक प्रमाण होती है: बूढ़े शेरों की अयाल गहरी होती है।
  • शेरों के सबसे करीबी रिश्तेदार बाघ हैं: फर के बिना, ये दोनों लगभग समान दिखते हैं, और केवल एक विशेषज्ञ उनमें अंतर बता सकता है।
  • 10–13 वर्षों का औसत जीवन-काल होता है।
